sO WHAT ARE YOU rATFACE?
If you want to make it look oldstlyle why not put on a film grain in editing. You could put in little caption boards between shots and so forth, shoot it all on DV and not have to mess with film at all!!

I remember the part you speak of. Pretty high contrast black and white . Most likely undercranked to give it the sped up look. But the part I remember most was the use of that silent era makeup to darken the lips and around the eyes and overall lighten the rest of the face. Very stage like makeup. And stege like performing as if to the back row. I think they lit the faces fairly flat and straight on to avoid strong shadows on the kisser.
The part you may not be able to capture is the inconsistancy of a hand crancked camera. They did this in Coppola's Dracula in one scene when Drac gets to London by actually using an ancient hand crancted camera. the only way I can think of with anything now would be to use a clockwork motor driven cam like a bolex or Quartz and put some pressureon and off on the turning part.

Thank you i will see what i can get my hands on, i was thinking of usin a super 8 with Russian monochrome film like someone suggested (very wisely too) will this not work? And yeah big gestures and make up work well too. Cheers!
